FREELAND, Mich. - Fifty-nine Saint Mary's student-athletes and all eight varsity teams received academic distinctions from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) for the 2018-19 academic year.

It is the fifth consecutive year Saint Mary's has had at least 50 student-athletes earn a spot on the conference's honor roll listing. For the first time in department history, Saint Mary's had each of the College's eight varsity sports achieve MIAA Team GPA Award status. Additionally, it is the first time in MIAA history that a school has had 100 percent of its MIAA sports achieve the academic honor. The MIAA has presented the Team GPA Award each year since the 1998-99 academic year.

In order to earn the MIAA Academic Honor Roll distinction, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average for the entire academic year while earning a varsity letter in a conference-sponsored sport. The MIAA Team GPA Award is bestowed if a team has  a collective grade point average of 3.3 or above for the academic year.

The Belles volleyball team led all of the Saint Mary's programs with a 3.694 cumulative grade point average for 2018-19. The tennis (3.422), basketball (3.411), soccer (3.403), and golf (3.402) teams each eclipsed the 3.4 mark. The cross country team (3.394), lacrosse team (3.387), and softball team (3.359) were each solidly above the requisite 3.3 grade point mark.

Five members of the Class of 2019 were four-year MIAA Academic Honor Roll honorees this year. Erin Maloney, Kate Kelly, Krystal Harris, Megan Knudsen, and Elizabeth Preister each posted at least a 3.5 grade point average every year during their time competing for the Belles. Additionally, two-sport athletes Delaney Rohlman, Megan Saunders, and Olivia Lathers were all recognized for their academic success this past year. More than 50 percent of Saint Mary's student-athletes earned MIAA Academic Honor Roll accolades for the 2018-19 year.
