Belles Tie for Second at Polar Beaver Classic

LIMA, Ohio - The Saint Mary's golf team shot a 330 on day two to finish with a combined score of 653 and tie for second place at the Polar Beaver Classic hosted by Bluffton and Ohio Northern Universities.
 
Co-host Ohio Northern claimed the team title as the Polar Bears posted the best team score of the day with a 327 to win the tournament with a 644. The College of Wooster shot a 331 to turn in a 36-hole score of 653, Mount St. Joseph posted 328 for a tournament total of 653, and the Belles also had a 653 to tie the Scots and the Lions. Fellow MIAA member Calvin rounded out the team top five with a 659. Alyssa Haverstraw of Mount St. Joseph moved to the top of the leaderboard to take the individual medalist title with a 154 over the two-day tournament. 
 
The Belles were led on day two by Julia Lizak's four-over 76 (36-40) as the sophomore posted the best round of the day on Saturday. Lizak had ten pars, birdies on par four No. 1 and par five No. 9, and did not have a score above a bogey in the round. Her two-day total of 157 gave her fourth place overall in a field of more than 80 competitors. Lizak finished tied for the best par four scoring over 36 holes, posted 18 pars in two days, and her three birdies tied for the third-most over the weekend.
 
Haley Angel shot an 82 and had a two-day score of 165 to finish tied for 13th. The senior had nine pars on Saturday and circled a birdie on par four No. 15. She was among the tournament leaders in both par four and par five scoring over the weekend, and her 16 pars was tied for 16th in the field. Colleen Hand also shot an 82 and finished tied for 18th with a 167 on the weekend. The freshman carded eight pars with a birdie on par five No. 9. She finished the tournament with three birdies to tie for third and was tied for eleventh in par three scoring (+3).
 
Katelyn Tokarz and Joanna James both turned in scores of 90 for the Belles. Tokarz finished 17th in the field with a two-day total of 166 after posting five pars on Saturday in her round. James, meanwhile, tied for 34th with a 173 on the weekend. James had six pars and added a birdie on par four No. 15 on Saturday. The duo each had 16 pars during the weekend to tie for 16th among all players in the field.
 
Amanda Melling shot an 80 for the best score among players competing as individuals for the second day in-a-row. Melling finished tied for 10th with a two-day combined score of 164. She had 11 pars on Saturday with a birdie on par three No. 16. Her 19 total pars over the weekend was tied for the fourth-most in the field, and she was two-over on par three holes to tie for the fourth-best scoring average.
 
The Belles now shift their focus to the re-scheduled MIAA Jamboree hosted by Trine. The event, which was rained out in October, is slated to take place on Thursday, April 11 at Trine's Zollner Golf Course starting at 1:00 p.m.
