Kane and Rubio Sweep MIAA Athlete of the Week Honors

FREELAND, Mich. - Saint Mary's lacrosse players Bridget Kane and Valentina Rubio were tabbed as the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Women's Lacrosse Offensive and Defensive Athletes of the Week on Monday, May 9.
 
Kane, a senior midfielder from Binghamton, New York, picked up MIAA Offensive Athlete of the Week honors after posting five goals, six assists, nine ground balls, nine draw controls, and six caused turnovers on the week as the Belles captured the conference tournament title. In the championship contest against Trine, the senior posted five points in the second half alone as the Belles overcame a 9-8 deficit for a 19-15 victory.
 
Rubio, a freshman defender from Wayland, Michigan, was named MIAA Defensive Athlete of the Week as she tallied 11 ground balls and caused three turnovers on the week. Her defensive efforts were key to a shutout fourth quarter in a semifinal win over Hope and a shutout third quarter in the championship victory over Trine as Saint Mary's captured the MIAA Tournament title.
 
It is the second MIAA Offensive Athlete of the Week honor of the year for Kane and the third of her career. It is the first MIAA Defensive Athlete of the Week recognition for Rubio.
