ANGOLA, Ind. - The Saint Mary's lacrosse team came up short in a 17-4 final at Trine on Tuesday evening.

Trine got on the scoreboard early before the two sides played a back-and-forth stretch of play over the next three-plus minutes. The Thunder, however, netted a goal with just over ten minutes on the clock and added their third a minute and a half later for a 3-0 advantage. Emma Zmudzinski came up with a save on Trine's next shot on goal, but the Thunder retained possession and tallied another goal for a 4-0 lead. After a timeout, the Belles won the ensuing draw control and capitalized on the chance as Reese Bauer threaded a pass from below the goal line extended to Alyssa Grant. Grant buried the close-range goal to get the Belles on the scoreboard with 7:11 on the clock. Christiana Singler caused a turnover after Trine won the next draw, and Lana Skibins had a low shot on goal stopped on the doorstep. Zmudzinski added a save at the other end before a free position chance by the Thunder made it a 5-1 game. A late goal by Trine made it 6-1 at the quarter break.

Trine netted a goal to open the second quarter, but Emma Zmudzinski stuffed a shot on goal with a save and added a second save a minute later as the Belles fought on. Four consecutive goals by Trine, however, pushed the difference to 11-1 with 7:06 on the clock. The Belles continued to battle. A strong re-defend by Valentina Rubio led to a failed clear by the Thunder. Rubio picked up the ground ball, sprinted to goal, and ripped a shot in from the right side of the critical scoring area with a minute to go in the quarter. The Thunder, however, used a two-player advantage after a pair of green cards to score with 35 seconds on the clock to take a 12-2 lead at the half.

The Belles had an early chance to stop the running clock. Alyssa Grant had her free position chance saved, and Saint Mary's was unable to get a shot off on an extended possession after that save. Trine used a player-up opportunity to extend their lead to 13-2 with 12:21 on the clock. Saint Mary's remained determined to cut into the deficit. Lana Skibins had a shot on the doorstep saved with just under 11 minutes to go in the quarter. Emma Zmudzinski posted another save with nine minutes remaining. The defense came up with a stop after Kathryn Kalinowski caused a turnover while Christiana Singler picked up the ground ball. Julia Gorski then tried to get the Belles going in transition but had her effort saved with over eight minutes remaining in the quarter. Singler had a shot tail wide, and Valentina Rubio saw a shot saved with 5:33 on the clock. The Belles kept that extended possession alive, and Kalinowski picked up an assist on a goal by Alyssa Grant with five minutes on the clock. Zmudzinski came away with another save two minutes later, but the Thunder used a player-up advantage in the waning moments of the quarter to lead 14-3 going into the fourth.

Trine posted an early goal in the fourth, but the Belles came right back moments later. Christiana Singler caused a turnover, collected the ground ball, sprinted up the field, and buried a goal all within 20 seconds to make it a 15-4 game with 10:55 on the clock. Saint Mary's was unable to edge any closer down the stretch as Trine added two goals over the final eight minutes for the 17-4 final score.
