Belles Stymied by Panthers

The soccer team huddles up together prior to the start of a game.
HANOVER, Ind. - The Saint Mary's soccer team fell in a 1-0 final against Hanover on Friday night.

Sophia Fleming registered a pair of shots for the Belles in the opening 21 minutes of action while Riley Lindsey proved to be up to the task of shutting down the Panthers' offense with seven saves over that same stretch of time. Grace Barresi added a shot on goal from the top of the box in the 14th minute.

The game remained scoreless until the 53rd minute when the host Panthers found the back of the net. Barresi registered her second shot on goal in the 63rd minute of action with an effort from inside the box, and Lauren Ryan tallied a close-range shot on goal of her own less than two minutes as the Belles built momentum in the second half. Ellen Hartzog added a shot that went right of the goal in the 68th minute, but Saint Mary's was unable to find the equalizer.

Hanover held a 29-6 advantage over Saint Mary's in shots in the contest while the possession was more evenly distributed between the two sides.

Riley Lindsey collected 20 saves in goal to keep the Belles in the mix. It also marks the first time in nearly 20 years a Saint Mary's goalkeeper has amassed 20 or more saves in goal as it was last accomplished by Maureen MacDonald in a 1-1 double overtime tie against Calvin on October 5, 2002. Grace Barresi had two shots on goal, Sophia Fleming added two shots, and Lauren Ryan and Ellen Hartzog each had a shot.

Saint Mary's (0-2-2) remains in Central Indiana throughout the weekend as the Belles travel to DePauw for a noon contest against the Tigers on Sunday.
