Belles Prevail Against Battling Bishops

Elizabeth Preister hits a back-hand return in her tennis match.
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's tennis team outlasted visiting Ohio Wesleyan in a 6-3 final in tennis action on Sunday afternoon.

Alyssa Gulli and Elizabeth Preister hardly missed a beat as the pair were the first tandem off the court with a commanding 8-1 win at three doubles. Meredith Heckert and Lilly Chamberlin had a marathon first game in their two doubles competition, but the duo eventually fell short in the game and in the match in an 8-1 final. Monica Davy and Megan Davy trailed 4-3 in their one doubles competition before winning back-to-back games for a 5-4 lead. Both sides held serve down the stretch to force a tiebreaker at 7-7. The Davy duo surged ahead 6-3 and closed out the tiebreaker with a 7-5 win for the victory at their flight.

Monica Davy had a hard-fought 6-1, 6-3 loss at one singles a short while later, but Alyssa Gulli regained some momentum for the Belles with a 6-2, 6-0 win at five singles to make the overall score 3-2 in favor of Saint Mary's. Meredith Heckert fought off a late push by her opponent for a 6-2, 6-4 decision at three singles to put the Belles a point within clinching the win. Megan Davy had numerous long points at her two singles match but was unable to rally late in a 6-1, 6-3 final. Elizabeth Preister took a decisive first set 6-1 at six singles but fell 6-3 in the second set. The senior turned a 2-1 advantage into a 4-1 lead before clinching the team win with a 6-2 third set. Lilly Chamberlin battled back from a 6-1 loss in her first set at four singles to take a 7-5 second set. Chamberlin then rattled off five consecutive games before her opponent retired as the sophomore earned the victory to cap off the match.

In exhibition play, Lily Brand and Nicole Becker did not drop a game in an 8-0 win at four doubles.
