Belles Take Down Mountaineers, Fall to Tigers

KERRVILLE, Texas - The Saint Mary's tennis team opened their spring break trip to Texas with a 5-4 win over Schreiner. The Belles competed later in the evening and fell in an 8-1 final against East Texas Baptist University.
 
In the opening match of the day, the Belles fell behind 2-1 through the completion of doubles. Meredith Heckert and Lilly Chamberlin were narrowly edged out in an 8-6 final at two doubles. Alyssa Gulli and Elizabeth Preister pulled the Belles even with an 8-4 victory at three doubles. Monica Davy and Megan Davy had a long battle but came up short in an 8-4 one doubles final.
 
Alyssa Gulli was the first singles match off the court as the freshman prevailed 6-0, 6-4 at five singles. Elizabeth Preister then gave the Belles the lead with a 6-2, 6-2 win at six singles. Meredith Heckert put Saint Mary's within a point of the win after a 6-0, 6-4 victory at three singles. Lilly Chamberlin nearly came back to force a decisive third set at four singles but came up shy in the second set tiebreaker in a 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) final at four singles. Monica Davy shouldered a tough 3-6, 6-0, 6-0 loss at one singles. With the match on the line, Megan Davy came back from a second-set loss with a commanding third set for a 6-0, 1-6, 6-1 win at two singles to clinch the team victory.
 
 
Against the Tigers, East Texas Baptist University took all three doubles flights. Lilly Chamberlin and Meredith Heckert were stopped in an 8-0 final at two doubles. Megan Davy and Monica Davy battled but were stopped by a narrow 8-6 margin at one doubles. Alyssa Gulli and Elizabeth Preister had a marathon three doubles match but ultimately fell by a tight 8-7 (8-6) score.
 
Heckert and Megan Davy each came up shy in 6-3, 6-2 finals at two and one singles, respectively. Gulli nearly made a second-set comeback to force a third set, but the freshman was on the short end of a 6-2, 6-4 score at four singles. Monica Davy had a 6-3, 6-3 setback at three singles against the Tigers. Nicole Becker fell by the same 6-3, 6-3 margin at six singles. Lilly Chamberlin battled her way to a grueling 6-4, 7-5 win at five singles as the final match on the courts for the night.
 
The Belles (6-2) are slated to take on No. 11 ranked Trinity on Monday at 12:00 p.m. CDT.
