Belles Split Against Cougars, Saints

Elizabeth Preister prepares to return a shot.
ELKHART, Ind. - The Saint Mary's tennis team won 9-0 against Spring Arbor before falling in a tight 5-4 match against Aquinas at Eastlake Athletic Club on Saturday.

In the opening match of the day, the Belles built a commanding 3-0 lead through doubles play. Lilly Chamberlin and Meredith Heckert teamed up for a quick 8-1 win at two doubles. Elizabeth Preister and Alyssa Gulli followed suit with an 8-1 victory at three doubles a short while later. After a close start at one doubles, Monica Davy and Megan Davy distanced themselves and pulled away with an 8-2 decision for the Belles.

Gulli, Chamberlin, and Heckert quickly secured the team win for Saint Mary's in singles play. Gulli did not drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 five singles win. Chamberlin prevailed 6-1, 6-2 in her three singles match. Heckert was off the court just a few minutes later with a 6-1, 6-2 decision at four singles. Preister claimed a 6-1, 6-1 victory in her six singles competition, and Megan Davy took a 6-1, 6-1 win at one singles. Monica Davy battled her way back from being down 6-5 in the first set to force a tiebreaker at 6-6 at two singles. The senior jumped ahead early and came out on top 7-2 to claim the first set. She then carried over that momentum to the second set on her way to a 6-2 win to close out the team's 9-0 win.

Nicole Becker and Lily Brandt had an 8-2 exhibition doubles win against the Cougars, and Becker (8-0) and Carolyn Podawiltz (8-5) claimed exhibition singles victories.

The Belles battled back to forge a 2-1 lead through doubles against Aquinas in the evening match. In a tight three doubles match, Preister and Gulli held a narrow 7-6 lead and needed to break serve to take the victory. The pair did just that as a Preister lob led to a mis-hit return to end the match by an 8-6 score. Chamberlin and Heckert fell behind 6-3 at two doubles before storming back to take a 7-6 lead. Their Aquinas counterparts won the next game to force a tiebreaker, and Chamberlin and Heckert prevailed 7-4 for the 8-7 match win. Megan and Monica Davy were stopped short in an 8-4 final at one doubles as Saint Mary's held the 2-1 lead.

Gulli bounced back from an early 6-1 loss in the opening set by taking her second set 6-1. In a super tiebreaker, the freshman broke through with the 10-7 win at five singles. Preister completed a straight-set victory at six singles by 6-1, 6-2 scores. Heckert shouldered a tough 6-3, 6-4 setback at three singles, and Chamberlin came up just short in the first set 7-6 (8-6) before falling 6-0 in the second set at four singles. Megan Davy was stopped in a 6-2, 6-4 tight match at two singles. Monica Davy had numerous long points with power shots returned back-and-forth, but the senior was halted in a 6-3, 6-3 loss in one singles to end the evening.

The Belles (4-1) are back in action in a scrimmage on Friday against IUSB before hosting Ohio Wesleyan on Sunday at noon.
