Belles Power Past Brits

Leah Hosang prepares to hit the tennis ball.
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's tennis team won a 9-0 match over visiting Albion to clinch third in the MIAA standings ahead of next week's conference tournament.

Lucy Chamberlin and Leah Hosang were up 2-1 in their two doubles match before holding serve and breaking serve to gain a 4-1 lead. The pair repeated that same sequence twice over en route to an 8-1 win as the first duo off the courts. Evelyn Demblans-Dechans and Kalyn Borger did not drop a game - which included battling back and holding serve after going to deuce - in an 8-0 victory at three doubles. Alayna Campbell and Emma Kealy led 2-1 early, held serve, and broke serve for a 4-1 lead. Both sides held to make it 5-2 before Campbell and Kealy rattled off three unanswered games to take an 8-2 decision at one doubles.

Alayna Campbell went on to take a commanding 6-0, 6-0 win at two singles for the Belles. Leah Hosang clinched the team win with a matching 6-0, 6-0 decision of her own at four singles. Kathleen McLeod was up 2-1 in her opening set at five singles before battling to hold serve and breaking serve for a 6-1 lead. The senior did not drop a game the remainder of the way in a 6-1, 6-0 final. Emma Kealy saw the score go to deuce in the second game of her three singles match and won to break serve. The freshman held in a close game to go up 3-0 and continued to get the shots she needed in a 6-1, 6-1 win. Lucy Chamberlin was leading 4-3 at one singles, and the senior broke serve before holding serve to close out a 6-3 win in her opening set. Chamberlin took a 2-1 lead and extended that advantage by holding her serve and breaking serve for a 4-1 advantage on her way to a 6-2 win in the set for the victory. Evelyn Demblans-Dechans trailed 2-1 and 3-2 in her six singles match until claiming back-to-back games for a 4-3 lead. The freshman worked her way to a 6-4 win in the first set and kept the momentum going in a 6-0 second-set win to capture the decision.

The Belles' success carried over into several exhibition wins on the day. Kathleen McLeod and Hannah Gerner won an 8-0 exhibition doubles match while Annika Smith and Katie Hunter also captured an exhibition doubles victory. Ava Stengle won twice in exhibition singles play with an 8-0 win and a 6-0 final. Smith took a 6-1 exhibition decision. Gerner won a 6-3, 6-2 exhibition singles match, and Katie Hunter prevailed 8-1.
