Belles Take Two Wins in South Carolina

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Saint Mary's tennis team captured an 8-1 win over Messiah before prevailing 7-2 against Carroll (Wis.) on day two of their spring break trip to South Carolina.
 
The Belles took an early lead against Messiah after Emma Kealy and Anna Gardner won an 8-1 match at two doubles. Alayna Campbell and Evelyn Demblans-Dechans then won an 8-2 contest at one doubles. Katie Hunter and Olivia Erickson battled hard from start to finish only to have the tiebreaker go the other way in an 8-7 (7-3) nailbiter at three doubles.
 
In a bit of a rare circumstance, the singles matches were decided in flight order as the Belles took all six matches. Alayna Campbell did not drop a game in a commanding 6-0, 6-0 one singles win. Emma Kealy captured a 6-3, 6-1 win at two singles, and Evelyn Demblans-Dechans clinched the team win with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at three singles. Anna Gardner battled her way to a 6-2, 6-3 decision at four singles while Hanna Gerner came off the court with a 6-3, 6-2 win at five singles. Katie Hunter capped things off without dropping a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win at six singles. 
 
In exhibition play, Michaela Hauer and Genevieve Brawner fell in a closely-contested 8-6 doubles match. Grace Clearwater powered her way to a 6-2 decision in a singles competition.
 
Against Carroll, the Belles took two of the three doubles matches and five of the six singles competitions to pick up their second win of the day. The duo of Campbell and Demblans-Dechans won 8-3 at one doubles while Kealy and Gardner were victorious by an 8-4 score at the number two flight. Hannah Gerner and Grace Clearwater were edged out in a tight 8-6 final at three doubles.
 
Campbell went on to win a back-and-forth duel in a 7-6, (7-4), 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) final at one singles. Kealy captured a 6-1, 6-2 decision at two singles. Demblans-Dechans came out on top in a 6-4, 6-0 match at three singles. Gardner was strong from start to finish in a 6-1, 6-0 win at four singles. Clearwater earned a solid 7-5, 6-3 win at five singles. Gerner had a back-and-forth match of her own but fell just short in a 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (10-7) final at six singles.
 
The Belles have a break from competition on Tuesday and compete in their final match of their spring break trip on Wednesday when they face Lynchburg at 5:00 p.m. EDT.
