Belles Compete Hard in Pair of Setbacks

Hannah Gerner hits a forehand shot.
ST. JOSEPH, Mich. - The Saint Mary's tennis team played hard but came up short in a 5-2 final against Spring Arbor and a 4-3 setback against Goshen on Friday at the South Shore Racquet Club.

Following the NAIA scoring format, doubles matches were played to six with the combined results of doubles play counting for a single point toward the team score.

Emma Kealy and Anna Gardner came up short in a 6-1 final at two doubles. The Cougars then clinched the doubles point as Alayan Campbell and Evelyn Demblans-Dechans were on the wrong side of a 6-3 final at one doubles. Grace Clearwater and Hannah Gerner, meanwhile, took an early lead and claimed a 6-3 win at the three doubles flight.

Kealy shouldered a 6-0, 6-3 setback at two singles, and Alayna Campbell suffered a 6-2, 6-0 loss despite several lengthy points at one singles. Hannah Gerner took a decisive first set and held off a late push in the second set for a 6-1, 7-5 victory at six singles for the Belles. Katie Hunter saw too many bounces go the other way in a 6-3, 6-3 setback at five singles. Evelyn Demblans-Dechans and Anna Gardner both had marathon tiebreakers to decide their matches. Demblans-Dechans ultimately fell in a 4-6, 7-5, 10-7 final at three singles. Gardner battled back from a deficit in her tiebreaker, rattled off three consecutive points, and claimed a 6-2, 4-6, 12-10 win at four singles.

The Belles had a tight match to end the evening against Goshen. Saint Mary's picked up the doubles point after Emma Kealy and Anna Gardner won 6-4 at two doubles. The Belles earned a forfeit win at three doubles and nearly had the sweep as Alayna Campbell and Evelyn Demblans-Dechans fell in a tight 7-5 final at one doubles.

Hannah Gerner continued her strong day with a comeback win at five singles with a 2-6, 6-1, 10-6 victory. Alayna Campbell retired from her two singles match while trailing 6-0, 6-1. Anna Gardner ended on the short side of 6-4, 6-2 final at three singles. Emma Kealy battled but was narrowly edged out in a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) match at one singles. Evelyn Demblans-Dechans had a back-and-forth nail-biter at four singles, but the tiebreaker went the other way in a 7-6, 4-6, 12-10 contest. Katie Hunter picked up a win by forfeit at the six singles slot on the night.

The Belles (2-4) have a scrimmage on Sunday before returning to competition next weekend when they host Carthage and Concordia Chicago at the South Bend Racquet Club on Saturday starting at 3:45 p.m.
