Belles Swept in MIAA Opener

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Saint Mary's College Softball fell to Alma College in both games of their MIAA opener, 14-1 in game one and 8-3 in game two. The Belles fall to 6-10 (0-2 MIAA) while the Scots improve to 10-10 (2-0 MIAA).

Game One

Alma would get out to a quick start, scoring seven runs in the first two innings. Saint Mary's would come back and add their lone run of the game in the bottom of the second inning, thanks to an RBI single from freshman Lydia Hinga (Portage, MI) to bring junior Sam Mikitka (Naperville, IL) around to score.

The Scots would continue to add to their lead, adding two in the third, four in the fourth, and one in the fifth to shut down and take out the Belles in five innings.

Hinga and freshman Talia Jorgensen (St. Paul, MN) would record the lone hits on the game for Saint Mary's. Mikitka would be the pitcher on record, throwing 3.1 innings, allowing 13 runs on 10 hits. Freshman Ashlyn Yeo (Jackson, MI) would finish the game, throwing 1.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits.

Game Two

Alma would continue to stay hot at the plate, adding two runs in the first and third innings. Saint Mary's would add a run in the top of the fourth as freshman Arianna Vazquez (Carol Stream, IL) would single to left field, bringing home freshman Gia Schiavone (Poland, OH). 

The Scots would add four more runs in the bottom of the fourth before the Belles would finish with two runs in the top of the seventh. With two on and no outs, sophomore Madi Ingolia (Lemont, IL) singled to left field to bring home Mikitka from second. After a ground out to advance the runners, Jorgensen would get an RBI groundout to third base, scoring sophomore Sammy Schrader (Romeoville, IL).

Schiavone would lead the way for Saint Mary's going 3 for 3 at the plate with a double and a run scored. Vazquez, Mikitka, and Ingolia would record the other hits for the Belles. Freshman Faith Dean (Monroe, MI) would be the pitcher of record, throwing 3.1 innings, allowing eight runs, four earned, on eight hits. Schrader would throw 2.2 innings while allowing two hits.

Saint Mary's returns to action on Tuesday, April 8, as they host the University of Olivet with a 3 and 5pm start times. This will also be the Belles StrikeOut Cancer game.
