Belles Fall to Bulldogs in Tough Battle

ADRIAN, Mich. - Saint Mary's College Basketball fell to Adrian College on Saturday afternoon, 70-57. The Belles fall to 4-12 (1-6 MIAA) on the year while the Bulldogs improve to 4-12 (3-4 MIAA)

Both teams would battle back and forth in the first quarter as they would go into the first break knotted up at 14. Saint Mary's would outshoot Adrian in the quarter in a close matchup, 40% to 38%. Both teams took advantage of trips to the free throw line as the teams combined for seven made attempts. Senior Lauren Gumma (Troy, MI) knocked down two three point attempts to lead the Belles with six points.

The Bulldogs would get out to a fast start in the second quarter, going on an 11-2 run to take a significant lead. But the Belles would storm back, going on a 16-3 run, including a 14-0 stretch, to go into the halftime break with a 32-28 lead. Freshman Ella Notaro (Crystal Lake, IL) capped off the run with a buzzer beater layup. Notaro would also lead all scorers with nine points in the first half.

Adrian would come back in the third quarter and outscore Saint Mary's 19-10 while shooting 50% from the field to go into the last break with a 47-42 lead. Senior Julia Schutz (Dyer, IN) moved into double figure points to lead the team with 12.

While shooting 50% from the field in the final quarter, the Belles would get outscored 23-15 as the Bulldogs would close out their win. Both teams would shoot 43% from the field on the game but it was Adrian who had a significant advantage in the rebounding category, 31-16, which turned out to be the difference maker.

Schutz would lead the team with 16 points, her tenth game this season recording double-digit points. Gumma and sophomore Kate Restovich (Wildwood, MO) would each finish in double-figures with 14 and 10 points respectively while Notaro would finish with nine. Gumma would go 5-6 from the field including 4-5 from three point range. Restovich and Gumma would grab a team high four rebounds each while Restovich would dish out a team best five assists.

Saint Mary's concludes their road trip on Wednesday with a trip to Albion College with tipoff set for 7pm before returning to the Angela Athletic Complex on Saturday, January 25, to host Calvin University for a 1pm tipoff.
