Belles Fall in Conference Opener

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Saint Mary's College Lacrosse fell to conference opponent Albion College on Tuesday night, 13-4. The Belles fall to 3-6 (0-1 MIAA) on the year while the Britons improve to 3-6 (1-0 MIAA). 

Saint Mary's would keep it level throughout the first fifteen with Albion gaining a slight lead ending the quarter with a 3-2 lead. Junior Mary Grace Heekin (Fayetteville, GA) obtained the first goal for the Belles with sophomore Kathryn Kalinowski (Atlanta, GA) assisting. Freshman Annabelle Spruill (Brookhaven, GA) would find the back of the net with 41 seconds left to head to the second, giving the Belles momentum. Sophomore Cate Krema (Western Springs, IL) would get her first assist of the game on Spruills goal. 

The Britons would get on the board first in the second before Heekin would add her second goal of the night, keeping the Belles within one. Albion would then go on to add three more goals, heading into halftime with a 7-3 lead.

The Belles could not keep up with the Britons as they would go on to score six unanswered goals. Heekin would finish the day with a goal, securing her first collegiate hat trick. Senior Valentina Rubio (Wayland, MI) would get her first assist of the night on the goal.

Heekin and Spruill would be the only Belles in scoring while Kalinowski, Krema, and Rubio would earn assists. Heekin and freshman Piper Downey (Northbrook, IL) would lead the team with four shots each, Heekin having all four be on goal. Sophomore Sophia Delgado (Indianapolis, IN) would lead the team, causing three turnovers.

Senior Emma Zmudzinski (Granger, Ind.) and freshman Kaya Seaboy (Evansville, Ind.) would split the day at the goal with seven combined saves. Zmudzinski would save four shots in the first half while Seaboy would save three in the second.

Saint Mary's hits the road to take on conference opponents Alma College on Saturday, April 5th at 1pm and Adrian College on Tuesday, April 8th at 4pm. The Belles will come back home for their annual Morgan's Message game to take on Trine Saturday, April 12th at 1pm.
