ALMA, Mich. - Two quick goals by host Alma midway through the second half proved to be the difference as the Saint Mary's soccer team fell in a 4-3 final on Saturday against the Scots.
The Belles got on the scoreboard first in the contest. Lexi Trombly buried a shot off of a pass from Rose Stackhouse in the 18th minute for the 1-0 Saint Mary's lead. Sophia Fleming then gave the Belles a 2-0 advantage with a goal in the 25th minute of action. The Scots responded with a goal of their own in the 29th minute as the game stood at 2-1 at the halftime break.
Saint Mary's extended their lead to two goals. Jillian Bowen threaded a pass through the defense for Rose Stackhouse to run onto in open space. Stackhouse held off the final defender and had enough power off of a deflection by the goalkeeper to see her team-leading tenth goal of the year roll over the line in the 56th minute.
Alma, however, came back with a goal two minutes later. The Scots built momentum from that goal and posted a pair of goals in the 77th and 78th minutes to go up 4-3. The Belles were unable to generate a scoring opportunity down the stretch as the hosts prevailed by the one-goal margin.
Rose Stackhouse led the Belles with a goal and an assist in the match. Lexi Trombly and Sophia Fleming each tallied a goal, and Jillian Bowen registered her fourth assist of the season. Thallia Robles made a season-high 12 saves in goal.
The Belles return home to host Calvin on Tuesday, October 15 at 7:00 p.m. The match is being co-sponsored by the Belles Against Violence Office (BAVO) as the office and the team join together for a Domestic Violence Awareness Game.
