NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's soccer team fell in a 7-0 contest against visiting Calvin on Tuesday evening.

 

The Belles had one of their best scoring chances of the night on the opening possession of the game. Jillian Bowen played a ball to Lexi Trombly. Trombly flicked the ball back to Rose Stackhouse, who then played a leading pass into space for Bowen to run onto in the box. Bowen took a touch before curling a shot in toward goal, but the effort sailed wide left and hit the side netting of the goal for the goal kick. Calvin broke the 0-0 deadlock with a goal in the 19th minute off of loose rebound in the box for a one-goal advantage. Saint Mary's built toward a possible chance to equalize in the 25th minute. Megan Saunders worked around a Calvin player to push the ball ahead centrally toward Lexi Trombly. Trombly won the ball against a defender, quickly settled, and lined up a shot from the top of the box only to have the effort blocked by a second defender.

 

The Belles had another possession build toward a scoring chance in the 34th minute. A throw in by Emily Stross was nodded down by Trombly toward the feet of Stackhouse in the defensive end. Stackhouse shielded a defender before flicking a pass through a pair of Calvin players into space along the right side of the box for Maddy Hansen to run onto. Hansen's first-touch shot just outside of the six-yard box, however, curled right of frame as the game remained 1-0. The Knights added a second goal in the 40th minute for a 2-0 advantage. Late in the period, Rose Stackhouse battled to regain possession in the Belles' offensive end. The sophomore found the feet of Jillian Bowen with a pass in the center of the zone. Bowen turned and sent a shot toward goal from 30 yards out, but the effort was tailing wide right from the start as the game stood at 2-0 at the halftime break.

 

The Knights added to their lead with an early goal and added four additional tallies to the scoresheet over the final 45 minutes of play for the 7-0 margin. The best scoring chance of the second period for the Belles came in the 77th minute. Maya Cole rocketed a shot from 35 yards out. The effort nearly took an advantageously high bounce over the goalkeeper, but the Calvin netminder was able to make the above-the-head save to stop Cole's chance.

 

Jillian Bowen had a pair of shots for the Belles. Maya Cole put a shot on goal, and Lexi Trombly and Maddy Hansen each added a shot. Thallia Robles made six saves.

 

The Belles (5-7-1, 0-3-1 MIAA) travel to Kalamazoo on Saturday for a noon conference match against the Hornets.
