2019 Soccer Outlook

The soccer team gathers for a huddle.

After posting the most wins since the 2014 season this past fall, the Saint Mary's soccer team is eager to continue their upward trend of success in the 2019 season.

Last season, the Belles scored the more goals than any season since 2012 and boasted two 20-plus point scorers for the first time since the 2004 season. Through increased offensive and defensive production over the past three seasons, the team has their sights set on even higher levels of success in 2019.

Rose Stackhouse, Kellen Hinchey, Megan Saunders, Maya Cole, and Lindsey Herdsman lead a group of returners poised to contribute on the pitch this fall. A Second Team All-MIAA selection, Stackhouse tied the program record for goals in a game (4) and had the highest number of total goals (12) and points (28) by a Saint Mary's soccer player since 2004. Hinchey, Saunders, and Cole will be looked toward as mainstays in the midfield while Herdsman returns to the backfield as the Belles conceded almost half as many goals as they allowed in the previous season.

Each of the five started all 18 games for Saint Mary's in 2018 and each logged better than 1,340 minutes. Hinchey, Saunders, Cole, and Herdsman each posted at least four points offensively to bolster the production on both ends of the pitch.

Thallia Robles, Lexi Trombly, and Becca Stella all return to the pitch in 2019. Robles enters her senior season with more than 300 career saves in better than 3200 minutes in goal. Trombly was third on the team in total points (11) and goals (5) a season ago. Stella was a strong contributor to the Belles' defensive efforts as she made 11 appearances in her first season for the Belles. Eleven newcomers join the squad in 2019 as the team looks to continue to build on their recent success.

Saint Mary's opens their season on Friday, August 30 when they travel to Ohio to take on Bluffton University. The Belles start their home slate of competitions on Sunday, September 1 when they host Earlham at 1:00 p.m. Conference play begins for Saint Mary's on Tuesday, October 1 when Albion visits the Purcell Athletic Fields for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
