Belles Fall to Thunder in MIAA Opener

ANGOLA, Ind. - After a weather delay pushed back the start time, the Saint Mary's soccer team came up short in a 2-0 final at Trine on Tuesday night.
 
The host Thunder got on the scoreboard early with a goal in the third minute. The Belles countered with pressure and got a shot from Izzi Linus in the 22nd minute and a shot on goal by Margaret Slove in the 23rd minute. Trine had a chance go wide right in the 30th minute, and Layne Ridderman registered a shot in the 36th minute as the score remained 1-0 at halftime.
 
Saint Mary's had a pair of early chances in the second period. Grace Barresi had a shot go beyond the top-right corner of the goal before having a shot on goal saved two minutes later. Mary Kaczynski nearly found the equalizer in the 57th minute only to have her shot go off the crossbar. Barresi had another good look at goal in the 66th minute, but the junior's attempt was saved by the Trine goalkeeper. Caroline Miklavcic kept Saint Mary's in the mix with a save in the 73rd minute. Going the other way, Grace Brown had a chance for the Belles a minute later, but the freshman's strike was saved to keep the score at 1-0. Kaitlyn Day, Mary Kaczynski, and Margaret Slove each registered a shot within the span of four minutes late in the period with each attempt going off frame. Barresi had another look in the 86th minute tail high. The Thunder, meanwhile, capitalized on a late foul and free kick with a goal in the 87th minute for the 2-0 advantage as Trine would take the two-goal decision at home.

Grace Barresi had four total shots with two shots on goal. Margaret Slove had two shots and one on goal, and Mary Kaczynski registered a pair of shots. Grace Brown had a shot on goal. Kaitlyn Day, Layne Ridderman, and Izzi Linus each tallied a shot. Caroline Miklavcic had a pair of saves for the Belles on the night.
 
Saint Mary's (5-4, 0-1 MIAA) is back at home on Sunday when they host Hiram at 2:00 p.m.
