Belles Stay Hot and Sink Firebirds

Evelyn Demblans-Dechans, wearing a white visor, grey top, and dark skirt, prepares to hit the tennis ball in an outdoor match.

SANLANDO, Fla. - The Saint Mary's tennis team prevailed in a 6-3 final against Carthage in the Belles' second match of their trip to Florida.

Alayna Campbell and Emma Kealy had a tough 8-0 setback at one doubles, but the two doubles pairing of Leah Hosang and Lucy Chamberlin along with the three doubles duo of Kathleen McLeod and Evelyn Demblans-Dechans took matching 8-4 wins at their flights to put the Belles up 2-1.

Demblans-Dechans made quick work of her six singles counterpart by taking a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Chamberlin fell in a one-singles matchup by 6-1, 6-3 scores before Leah Hosang captured a close 6-4, 6-4 win at four singles. Alayna Campbell's two singles match was tight throughout as the sophomore was stopped from the comeback in a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 bout. Emma Kealy clinched the team win for the Belles in a three-set match of her own with the freshman coming out on top 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Kathleen McLeod bounced back from a 6-3 loss in her opening set at five singles with a narrow 7-5 win in set two to force a deciding stanza. With the match already decided, the two played a ten-point super tiebreaker, and McLeod prevailed with a 10-6 score.

Several Belles took to the court in exhibition matches against the Firebirds. Hannah Gerner and Kalyn Borger had an 8-2 setback in a doubles competition while Annika Smith and Katie Hunter claimed an 8-3 win. Smith went on to take an exhibition singles win in a tiebreaker by an 8-7 (7-1) score. Borger was on the short end of an 8-3 final, and Ava Stengle came up just shy in an 8-7 singles match. Gerner had her singles competition end in a 6-6 tie as the time on the courts came to a close before the pair could determine a winner.

The Belles (6-0) are slated to take on both Marywood and St. Scholastica on Wednesday. The match against Marywood is set to begin at 11:30 a.m. while the St. Scholastica match has a 3:00 p.m. start time. Both matches will be played at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.
